A Guide To The Best Hiking Backpacks

Whether you’re hiking for just the day or for several days or longer, a hiking backpack is absolutely necessary as it’ll hold any Backpackers couple walking hand in handequipment and necessities required for your trip.  Day trips will only require a small backpack whereas hikes lasting a few days to a couple of weeks will require a large backpack.

A backpack and rucksack are often used interchangeably, you may have also heard of the term “internal frame backpacks”.  This refers to a large hiking rucksack which when you carry it, it makes you feel like it’s part of you, it also has an internal frame hence the name which is usually hidden within the bag material itself.

If the cost price is a factor for you then fortunately there are some less known brands that sell cheap hiking backpacks which are still very good quality.  Check our table below which will show the top 10 best hiking backpacks.

How To Choose The Best Hiking Backpack

If you’re new to hiking, we’re sure that when it comes to buying a hiking backpack, questions such as: “What size do I get?” “Are they waterproof?” Among many others must have crossed your mind at some point.

Hopefully we’ll cover these points and give you enough confidence to know what backpack to get.  The list of following factors below should be taken into account when buying a hiking rucksack:

Dimensions – Check what capacity size to choose first, once you’ve done that check the dimensions of the rucksack will be able to fit any large items you might want to pack.

hiking-in-the-rain

Most backpacks tend to be water resistant rather than waterproof

Material – The material can give an indication of how durable or water resistant the bag can be.

Water Resistant – Unlike hiking coats & hiking trousers, fully waterproof hiking backpacks are not that common, as they tend to be more water resistant rather than waterproof.  Water resistant is the ability to resist rain to some degree.

Many hikers have used water resistant backpacks and claimed nothing inside got wet despite going through rain.

Rain Cover – If you’re in any doubt of your backpack’s ability to withstand any rain then some will come with a rain cover which you can cover your bag with entirely to prevent rain from penetrating.

Chest Straps – Having the option of using a chest strap is quite useful, this will prevent the shoulder straps from sliding off your shoulders, and it’ll also ensure the backpack fits better.  If you choose a model without chest straps but you prefer having one, then you can pick up chest straps for cheap which can be added onto the shoulder straps.

Hip Straps – Having hip straps are very significant if you want to reduce the weight of the backpack on your shoulders and transfer a large chunk of that weight to your hips.  We’ll go into more detail below to show how you can reduce the weight of your backpack just by applying the correct technique.

Some hip straps will be connected to a hip belt which will usually have zipped pockets on both sides which is very handy for storing items as it can be easily accessed.

Weight – A lightweight hiking backpack is ideal however hip straps are more significant as spreading the weight to your stronger hip muscles will prevent your shoulders from getting tired and fatigued as easily.

Turn Heavy Baggage Into A Lightweight Hiking Backpack

REI demostrates how to effectively use the hip straps

If you have to carry a heavy backpack on your shoulders for a long period of time, the weight will really wear you down and you’ll be making yourself work harder unnecessarily.  If your backpack has hip straps you can really utilise this by applying a method of carrying your baggage to make it feel a lot lighter.

REI explains how to correctly wear your backpack for maximum comfort and so the weight is distributed to your hips as well.

Smaller bags with a capacity of up to 40L will not always have hip straps as the weight of the bag contents are likely to be less than a bag with a larger capacity.  Another perk of having hip straps is some of them will have a pouch either side enabling you to store goods in these handy pockets.

What Capacity Size Trekking Backpack To Go For?

One of the main factors to consider when buying a trekking backpack, is what capacity or size to choose.  The size of a backpack is usually measured in litres, so if it’s 40 litres it means you’ll be able to fit 40 litres worth of stuff inside.  You should also check the dimensions to get more accurate measurements of how big the bag is going to be.

The capacity to choose would depend on how long your hiking trip is going to be.  We’ve put together a list which will tell you what capacity size to go for based on how long your trip is going to be.  Please use this as a guideline only as different circumstances may require you to take a smaller or larger trekking backpack.
